A Run to Remember: Sylacauga Seniors Leave Their Mark

SYLACAUGA, Ala. - For the seven Sylacauga seniors, the final chapter of their high school basketball journey came to a close last Saturday morning in Birmingham.

CJ Franklin, Corbyn Patterson, Josh Speer, Kinsen Threatt, Erick O'Neal, Tristan Whetstone and Tre Wright donned the cardinal and white for the final time in the Class 5A State Championship game against Wenonah. While the result did not go in the Aggies' favor, what this senior class accomplished over the past two seasons left a lasting mark on the program and the community that supported them.

Two days earlier, the Aggies earned their spot in the championship game with a gritty 59-50 win over Guntersville in the Final Four. It was a game that reflected the identity of this senior class: resilient, tough, and ready for the moment.

Sylacauga trailed by three at halftime and did not grab control until the fourth quarter.

With 4:52 remaining, Guntersville's Kobe Brothers converted an and-one opportunity to give the Wildcats a 48-45 lead.

On the very next possession, Patterson rose up and buried a three-pointer that tied the game.

Moments later, Speer muscled in a basket inside to give the Aggies a 50-48 lead. From that point on, Sylacauga never surrendered control.

Over the final 4:36, the Aggies closed the game on a 14-2 run to clinch a spot in the state championship.

That momentum carried into the opening moments of the title game. Whetstone knocked down Sylacauga's first three-point attempt against Wenonah, briefly giving the Aggies a spark. The Dragons quickly responded, however, and pulled away to secure the championship.

When the final buzzer sounded, the emotions were impossible to hide.

Players embraced one another near the bench. Parents met their sons with hugs. Fans offered one final standing ovation to a group that had given the city of Sylacauga two unforgettable seasons.

During the broadcast, play-by-play announcer Jeremy Law thanked the coaches and players for the joy they brought over the past two seasons, adding that his heart went out to the seven seniors. Color analyst Alex Baumann followed by encouraging the players to be proud of their accomplishments and highlighting what a special group this senior class had been.

And their accomplishments were significant.

Over the past two seasons, Sylacauga's seniors helped lead the Aggies to back-to-back Area regular season and tournament championships. They captured consecutive regional titles, including this season's dominant wins over Elmore County and Marbury by more than 20 points each. They won two straight Final Four games, posted a combined 60-7 record over the past two seasons, and were perfect at home, finishing 29-0 inside their own gym.

Each senior left his mark on the program.

Patterson's outside shooting could ignite a crowd in seconds. Speer controlled the boards and battled inside every night. Franklin had the rare ability to take over a game when the moment demanded it. Whetstone delivered timely shots. O'Neal provided the defensive intensity that set the tone. Threatt added relentless hustle. Wright provided toughness and physical play.

Together, they formed the backbone of one of the most successful stretches of Sylacauga basketball in recent memory.

Their final game may not have ended with a championship trophy, but one loss cannot erase what this group built. They gave the community countless memories and carried the Aggie name with pride everywhere they went.

For Aggie Nation, this senior class will be remembered for far more than one morning in Birmingham.
